Website Update: Trips>2022 Munich and Amsterdam
2022 was a . . . strange year for us. We made no real photography trips. It was supposed to be, as the Lou Reed song goes, the beginning of a great adventure. I guess it was, but not the one we’d planned for. We were supposed to pick up the bimobil in the Spring and drive it back to Portugal through France and Spain. Then a big trip to the US. And then more travels through Europe in the bimobil. None of that happened. We went to Munich as planned, signed off on the bimobil, but couldn’t drive it back because Portugal didn’t want to give me a class C driver’s license. So we had to ship the rig to Portugal, where I had to be there to receive it, so Ann went to the US alone. Portugal’s bureaucracy created even more headaches over the months and . . . we decided to move to The Netherlands (where everything largely got sorted in reasonable order (I’m sure we’d still be waiting for Bimobil to be registered and on my Class C driver’s license if we’d stayed there)).
We did, however, take advantage of our opportunities and thus, can call our trips actual trips. In Munich, we were advised to plan on a several day stay, just in case something was amiss and they had to fix something for our approval. Since everything was in good order, that gave Ann and me a couple of days to wander around Munich where . . . I wound up buying a Leica.
Munich is a real city. We stayed at an air BNB that was in a working part of the city, within walking distance of the historic center (and a slew of camera shops we visited). So after hitting a few camera shops the first day (and buying one), we wandered around the city center doing our best imitation of street photography.
There’s a reason we’re landscape photographers. Still, it was enjoyable to feel the excitement of a city, to see new places and, best of all, eat really good food.
Our trip to Amsterdam was much the same - there for business, a few days for a buffer, and some free time to wander around. We spent one day signing business and visa paperwork, one day coordinating with the wonderful person helping us with our transition, a day driving through the country side to get a feel for rural areas, and a couple of days wandering around Amsterdam. We discovered that yes, there are a lot of bikes in The Netherlands.
And a lot of canals in Amsterdam.
As well as, some mighty fine restaurants.
